Auf einer Karte war ich auf den Eintrag ‚Val del Morte‘ gestoßen und habe mich spontan entschlossen, querfeldein dorthin zu wandern. Dieses Vorgehen hatte sich schon öfter bewährt, und auch diesmal sollte ich nicht enttäuscht werden.
Das Val del Morte entpuppte sich als eine äußerst bizarre Landschaft, geprägt von grotesken Lavaformationen. Man kann sehr gut sehen, dass es sich um einen relativ jungen Lavastrom handelt. Die sehr schnelle Abkühlung des Lavastroms hat zu einer Vielzahl skurriler Lavaformationen geführt.
Eine fast unheimliche Stille lag über dem Tal, unterbrochen nur vom gelegentlichen Summen von Insekten. Die bizarren Lavafelsen, der schwarze Lavasand – eine unwirkliche Kulisse. Doch dann entdeckte ich etwas Unerwartetes: Weiße Lilien blühten im schwarzen Lavasand – ein faszinierender Kontrast und eine ironische Ergänzung zum düsteren Namen des Tals.

I came across the entry ‘Val del Morte’ on a map and spontaneously decided to hike there cross-country. This approach had often proved successful and I was not to be disappointed this time either.
The Val del Morte turned out to be an extremely bizarre landscape, characterised by grotesque lava formations. You can clearly see that this is a relatively young lava flow. The very rapid cooling of the lava flow has led to a multitude of bizarre lava formations.
An almost eerie silence lay over the valley, interrupted only by the occasional buzzing of insects. The bizarre lava rocks, the black lava sand – an unreal backdrop. But then I discovered something unexpected: white lilies were blooming in the black lava sand – a fascinating contrast and an ironic addition to the gloomy name of the valley.
