Die Etappe von Penzance nach Botallack auf der Halbinsel Land’s End zeichnete sich vor allem dadurch aus, dass sie überraschend flach war – im Gegensatz zu den vorangegangenen Etappen auf den kleinen Küstenstraßen, die jede Flussmündung mit einem steilen Ab- und Aufstieg begleiteten. Was für eine Wohltat für den erschöpften Fahrradfahrer!
Leider, oder auch zum Glück, herrschte an diesem Tag der typische englische Nebel, der die Welt veränderte. Als wir den eigentlich unscheinbaren Ort St. Just passierten, stießen wir am Rand des Ortes unvermittelt auf einen kleinen Friedhof, den wir ohne den Nebel wohl kaum beachtet hätten. In diesem dichten Nebel wirkte er geradezu gespenstisch schön. Die alten Grabsteine, der dichte Nebel und die nahe liegenden, doch bereits im Dunst verschwindenden Häuser schufen hier eine wunderschöne und unwirkliche Szenerie. Solche Momente und Stimmungen muss man finden und nutzen.

The stage from Penzance to Botallack on the Land’s End peninsula was notable for being surprisingly flat – in contrast to the previous stages on the small coastal roads, which accompanied every river mouth with a steep descent and ascent. What a relief for the exhausted cyclist!
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the day was shrouded in typical English fog, which changed the world. As we passed through the otherwise unremarkable village of St. Just, we suddenly came across a small cemetery on the outskirts of the village, which we would hardly have noticed without the fog. In the thick fog, it looked almost ghostly beautiful. The old gravestones, the thick fog and the nearby houses disappearing into the haze created a beautiful and surreal scene. Moments and moods like these must be sought out and savoured.
