Stupas sind charakteristische buddhistische Bauwerke, die als Symbole für Buddha selbst und seine Lehren dienen. Ursprünglich als Erdhügel zur Bestattung von Herrschern errichtet, wurden sie im frühen Buddhismus zu Reliquienbehältern für Überreste des Buddha und später auch bedeutender Mönche umfunktioniert. Die Stupa von Bodnath, eine der größten ihrer Art weltweit, prägt die Umgebung deutlich. Als eines der wichtigsten Ziele buddhistischer Pilger aus Nepal und dem Himalaya blickt sie auf eine über 1500-jährige Geschichte zurück.
Mich hat besonders die schlichte Eleganz der Bodnath-Stupa im Kontrast zur üppigen Gestaltung der Swayambhunath-Stupa beeindruckt. Bodnath strahlt eine friedvolle und ruhige Atmosphäre aus, die sicherlich auch von der großen tibetischen Gemeinde geprägt wird, die hier seit Jahrhunderten eine spirituelle Heimat gefunden hat. Dennoch wirken die großen Buddha-Augen auf mich etwas bedrohlich.

Stupas are characteristic Buddhist buildings that serve as symbols of Buddha himself and his teachings. Originally built as earth mounds for the burial of rulers, in early Buddhism they were converted into reliquaries for the remains of the Buddha and later also of important monks. The Bodnath Stupa, one of the largest of its kind in the world, clearly characterises the surrounding area. As one of the most important destinations for Buddhist pilgrims from Nepal and the Himalayas, it can look back on over 1500 years of history.
I was particularly impressed by the simple elegance of the Bodnath stupa in contrast to the lavish design of the Swayambhunath stupa. Bodnath exudes a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, which is certainly also characterised by the large Tibetan community that has found a spiritual home here for centuries. Nevertheless, the large Buddha eyes seem somewhat threatening to me.
