Varanasi, früher Benares genannt, gilt als die heiligste Stadt Indiens und des Hinduismus. Es ist eine der ältesten Städte Indiens und hat eine jahrtausendealte Geschichte. Entlang des gesamten Gangesufers der Stadt erstrecken sich die heiligen Ghat’s, die für Hindus als Badestellen und rituelle Orte von großer Bedeutung sind. Seit mehr als 2.500 Jahren pilgern Gläubige nach Varanasi, um sich an den Ghat’s im heiligen Fluss Ganges zu baden und sich so von ihren Sünden zu reinigen.
Darüber hinaus zieht es viele alte Gläubige nach Varanasi, um dort zu sterben. Denn nach hinduistischem Glauben bricht der Kreislauf der Wiedergeburt, wenn man an den Ghat’s von Varanasi verbrannt und die Asche im Ganges verstreut wird.
Tagsüber sind die Ghats, die sich wie eine Uferpromenade durch die Stadt ziehen, bevölkert von vielen Ständen, Händlern und Menschen. Das Bild vermittelt einen guten Eindruck vom Leben und Treiben in Varanasi.

EVaranasi, formerly known as Benares, is considered the holiest city in India and Hinduism. It is one of the oldest cities in India and has a history dating back thousands of years. The sacred ghats, which are of great importance to Hindus as bathing and ritual sites, stretch along the entire banks of the Ganges. For more than 2,500 years, believers have been making pilgrimages to Varanasi to bathe in the holy river Ganges at the ghat’s and cleanse themselves of their sins.
In addition, many old believers are drawn to Varanasi to die there. According to Hindu belief, the cycle of rebirth is broken when one is cremated at the ghats of Varanasi and the ashes are scattered in the Ganges.
During the day, the ghats, which stretch through the city like a promenade, are populated by many stalls, traders and people. The picture gives a good impression of life and hustle and bustle in Varanasi.
