Die „Vogelinsel“ Lilla Karlsø vor der Küste Gotlands ist ein geschütztes Vogelschutzgebiet und darf nur im Rahmen von geführten Touren betreten werden. Die Insel besteht aus einem Kalkplateau mit steilen Klippen zum Wasser hin und einem vorgelagerten Abrasionsplateau. Wir waren für die Vogelführung auf die Insel gefahren, sahen jedoch nur einige wenige Trottellummen. Stattdessen gelangen mir beeindruckende Aufnahmen der Klippen. Bei unserer Ankunft während des Niedrigwassers lag das Abrasionsplateau noch trocken und war begehbar. Mit steigender Flut wurde es allmählich überflutet. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt konnte ich die faszinierende Form der Brandungshohlkehle in Verbindung mit dem vorgelagerten Felsen einfangen.

‘Bird Island’ off the coast of Gotland, southern Sweden, 1997
The ‘bird island’ Lilla Karlsø off the coast of Gotland is a protected bird sanctuary and may only be entered as part of a guided tour. The island consists of a limestone plateau with steep cliffs facing the water and an abrasion plateau in front of it. We had travelled to the island for the bird tour, but only saw a few guillemots. Instead, I managed to take some impressive photos of the cliffs. When we arrived during the low tide, the abrasion plateau was still dry and accessible. As the tide rose, it gradually flooded. At this point, I was able to capture the fascinating shape of the surf cave in combination with the rocks in front of it.
