Kathmandu – allein der Klang dieses exotischen Namens weckt Fernweh, ein Sehnsuchtsort der 68er-Generation, immer wieder als Traumziel beschworen. Und plötzlich stehe ich selbst in dieser pulsierenden Stadt, die so viel mehr ist als nur ein Traum. Auf engstem Raum drängen sich hier unterschiedlichste religiöse Bauwerke: Stupas, Pagoden, hinduistische Tempel und Statuen. Daneben beeindrucken historische Gebäude, während die alte Bausubstanz, durchzogen von schmalen, teils schlammigen und vermüllten Gassen, zunehmend verfällt. Das lebhafte Treiben der verschiedenen Ethnien, die diese Stadt bevölkern, prägt das Straßenbild. Besonders ins Auge fallen die zahlreichen Träger, die schwere Lasten vom zentralen Busbahnhof in die Stadt transportieren – eine Knochenarbeit, die an vergangene Zeiten erinnert. Auf dem Platz am Postamt treffen sie sich regelmäßig, warten auf neue Aufträge, ruhen sich aus, essen und tauschen sich aus.

Kathmandu – the very sound of this exotic name awakens wanderlust, a place of longing for the 1968 generation, repeatedly evoked as a dream destination. And suddenly I find myself in this vibrant city, which is so much more than just a dream. A wide variety of religious buildings are crowded together in a small space: stupas, pagodas, Hindu temples and statues. Alongside them are impressive historic buildings, while the old structures, criss-crossed by narrow, partly muddy and rubbish-strewn alleys, are increasingly falling into disrepair. The lively hustle and bustle of the various ethnic groups that populate this city characterises the street scene. Particularly striking are the numerous porters who carry heavy loads from the central bus station into the city – backbreaking work that is reminiscent of times gone by. They meet regularly in the square by the post office, waiting for new jobs, resting, eating and chatting.
