Diu, eine kleine Insel vor der Küste Gujarats, stand bis 1961 unter portugiesischer Kolonialherrschaft. Erst der Einmarsch indischer Truppen führte dazu, dass sie ein eigenständiges Unionsterritorium wurde, das administrativ zu Gujarat gehört.
Nach dieser Befreiung erlangte Diu vor allem Bekanntheit als liberales Alkohol- und Spielerparadies, da es im Gegensatz zum Bundesstaat Gujarat eine deutlich freizügigere Politik verfolgte. Dementsprechend prägten bei unserem Besuch zahlreiche Bars und Hotels das Bild der Stadt Diu und zogen sogenannte „Trinktouristen“ an.
Abgesehen davon ist die Insel jedoch auch sonst eine Reise wert. Die Palmenlandschaft ist für das sonst eher trockene Gujarat untypisch und bietet einen besonders reizvollen Kontrast. Wir verbrachten jedenfalls einige schöne und interessante Tage auf dieser Insel mit ihren beeindruckenden Stränden und Küsten.
Während einer Fahrradtour über die Insel Diu nahm ich dieses, für die Insel typische Bild auf: Eine schmale Straße führt durch die Palmenlandschaft und ein paar Jungs sind auf dem Weg nach Hause.

Diu, island off the coast of Gujarat, India, 1989
Diu, a small island off the coast of Gujarat, was under Portuguese colonial rule until 1961. It was only after Indian troops marched in that it became an independent union territory, administratively belonging to Gujarat.
After its liberation, Diu became known primarily as a liberal paradise for alcohol and gambling, as it pursued a much more permissive policy than the state of Gujarat. Accordingly, during our visit, numerous bars and hotels dominated the cityscape of Diu and attracted so-called ‘drinking tourists’.
Apart from that, however, the island is also worth a visit for other reasons. The palm tree landscape is atypical for the otherwise rather dry Gujarat and offers a particularly charming contrast. In any case, we spent some beautiful and interesting days on this island with its impressive beaches and coastline.
During a bike tour across the island of Diu, I took this picture, which is typical of the island: a narrow road leads through the palm tree landscape and a few boys are on their way home.
