• Aus meinen bearbeiteten Bildern werden maximal ein bis zwei Bilder pro Woche für den Favoriten-Bildband identifiziert und mit einer guten Erläuterung versehen.
• Keine chronologische oder sonst wie festgelegte Reihenfolge, stattdessen werden die neuen Bilder, dort einsortiert, wo sie gut passen.
• Es handelt sich um Bilder, die mir wichtig sind, ich habe bewusst den Begriff „Favoriten“ anstelle von „die Besten“ gewählt.
• Basis für die Idee sind Bildbände, in denen die Bilder sehr spartanisch präsentiert werden und es hinten eine Übersicht mit einem kleinen Miniaturbild mit Erläuterung gibt. Außerdem die wöchentliche Fotokolumne im Zeit-Magazin, in der jeweils ein bekannter Fotograf ein Bild pro Woche präsentiert und erläutert.

Das heißt ganz konkret: Dieser Bildband wird, solange ich noch aktiv fotografiere, ein never-ending Projekt sein, welches ständig wächst. Insofern ist es ein sehr persönliches und sehr dynamisches Projekt, die Reihenfolge der Bilder ändert sich ständig, es kommen neue Bilder, aus ganz unterschiedlichen Jahren dazu.

Seit Anfang der 2000er Jahre fotografiere und bearbeite ich meine Bilder analog und digital. Dabei fotografiere ich analog und entwickle den Negativfilm. Anschließend wird das Negativ mit einem Negativscanner gescannt und das Bild am Rechner „digital vergrößert“. Mit diesem Workflow ist natürlich auch das Thema der digitalen Präsentation immer mehr in den Vordergrund getreten, auch wenn der Ausdruck von Bildern damals noch schwierig und sehr kostenintensiv war. 2001 habe ich begonnen meine Bilder in sogenannten Bildbänden, DIN A3 Word-Vorlagen, zu organisieren und präsentieren. Diese sind nach geographischen Gesichtspunkten geordnet und werden von mir auch heute noch weitergeführt. Ca. 2015 / 2016 begannen meine Überlegungen zur Zusammenstellung eines neuen Bildbands zur Präsentation meiner Favoriten. Für dieses Album wähle ich die Bilder einzeln und handverlesen aus, es werden nur solche Bilder ausgewählt, die mich besonders beeindrucken und die ich tief in Erinnerung behalten habe. Die Vorauswahlliste enthält nur „abgehangene“ Bilder, d.h. Bilder, die mindestens ein halbes bis ein Jahr zuvor vergrößert wurden. Damit ist eine objektivere Beurteilung möglich. Viele Bilder bleiben lange in Warteposition, bis ich eine gute Idee zur Einordnung entwickelt habe, oder sie wieder aussortiert werden. Vor allem nehme ich mir viel Zeit für dieses Album. In der Regel wähle ich ein, maximal zwei Bilder pro Woche aus, manchmal auch keins, wenn ich keine gute Idee habe oder nicht genug Muße. Für jedes Bild suche ich einen prägnanten Titel und schreibe eine persönliche, möglichst anspruchsvolle Erläuterung. Ggf. überarbeite ich die Vergrößerung erneut, um auch die letzten Fehler und Macken zu beseitigen. Die ausgewählten Bilder sollen so gut sein, dass sie für sich selbst sprechen und nicht durch Masse, sondern durch Klasse bestechen. Von sehr ähnlichen bzw. gleichen Motiven soll möglichst nur ein Bild aufgenommen werden. Es gibt keine vorgegebene thematische oder chronologische Reihung der Bilder, aber ich versuche fiktive thematische Gruppen zusammenzuhalten. Die Reihung der Bilder und Gruppen unterliegt einer ständigen Anpassung. Hauptziel ist eine für mich stimmige Präsentation, unabhängig von Entstehungszeit und -ort. Alle Bilder werden einzeln, auf einer DIN A3 Seite im Format 18 x 24 cm, zentriert und ohne Rand präsentiert. Der Hintergrund ist ein dunkles Grau, auf dem die Schwarz-Weiß-Bilder besonders gut zur Geltung kommen. Dazu gibt es einen zweiten Band, in dem die Bilderläuterungen präsentiert werden. Dafür sind die Bilder in kleiner Darstellung mit Titel, Aufnahmeort und der zugehörigen Erläuterung in derselben Reihenfolge wie im Bildband dargestellt. Die Bilderläuterungen selbst sind eine weitere große Herausforderung. Ich muss zugeben, dass die sprachliche Qualität meiner ersten Entwürfe häufig verbesserungsbedürftig ist und ich gerne in meinem sehr beschreibendem Stil verharre. Mit dem Aufkommen der KI haben sich da neue Möglichkeiten erschlossen. Inzwischen werden neue Texte mit der KI überarbeitet und die bestehenden nach und nach überprüft. Dabei kommt es sehr auf den Prompt an. Nach einigen intensiven vergleichen und versuchen habe ich mit Bard / Gemini die besten Erfahrungen gemacht. Mit dem Prompt „Verbessere meinen Text sprachlich“ bekomme ich gute Ergebnisse mit drei Alternativen, die es wirklich Wert sind genau verglichen zu werden. Hilfreich ist, dass die Anpassungen erläutert und begründet werden. Meistens erzeuge ich dann meine persönliche Zusammenstellung der Vorschläge und achte darauf, dass die Ergebnisse nicht zu reißerisch ausfallen.

• A maximum of one or two pictures per week are identified from my edited images for the Favourite Picture Book and provided with a good explanation.

• The idea is based on illustrated books in which the images are presented very sparingly and there is an overview with a small thumbnail and explanation at the back. There is also the weekly photo column in Zeit magazine, in which a well-known photographer presents and explains one picture per week.

In concrete terms, this means that this photo book will be a never-ending project that is constantly growing as long as I am still actively photographing. In this respect, it is a very personal and very dynamic project, the order of the pictures is constantly changing, new pictures from very different years are added.

Since the early 2000s, I have been photographing and editing my images in analogue and digital format. I take analogue photos and develop the negative film. The negative is then scanned with a negative scanner and the image is ‘digitally enlarged’ on the computer. With this workflow, the topic of digital presentation naturally came more and more to the fore, even if the printing of images was still difficult and very cost-intensive at the time. In 2001 I started to organise and present my pictures in so-called picture books, DIN A3 Word templates. These are organised according to geographical aspects and I continue to do so today. Around 2015 / 2016, I started thinking about putting together a new photo book to showcase my favourites. For this album, I select the pictures individually and hand-picked; only those pictures are selected that particularly impress me and that I have kept deeply in my memory. The pre-selection list only contains ‘hung’ pictures, i.e. pictures that have been enlarged at least six months to a year before. This allows for a more objective judgement. Many pictures remain in a waiting position for a long time until I have developed a good idea for categorising them, or they are sorted out again. Above all, I take a lot of time for this album. As a rule, I select one, maximum two pictures per week, sometimes none if I don’t have a good idea or not enough time. I look for a concise title for each picture and write a personal, preferably sophisticated explanation. If necessary, I will revise the enlargement again to eliminate the last mistakes and flaws. The selected images should be so good that they speak for themselves and are not characterised by mass but by class. If possible, only one picture should be taken of very similar or identical motifs. There is no predetermined thematic or chronological order of the pictures, but I try to keep fictitious thematic groups together. The order of the pictures and groups is subject to constant adjustment. The main aim is to create a presentation that is coherent for me, regardless of the time and place of origin. All pictures are presented individually, centred and without borders, on a DIN A3 page in 18 x 24 cm format. The background is a dark grey, on which the black and white pictures stand out particularly well. There is also a second volume in which the explanations of the pictures are presented. The pictures are presented in a small format with the title, location and the corresponding explanation in the same order as in the illustrated book. The explanations of the pictures themselves are another major challenge. I have to admit that the linguistic quality of my first drafts is often in need of improvement and I like to stick to my very descriptive style. The advent of AI has opened up new possibilities. In the meantime, new texts are being revised with AI and the existing ones are being reviewed bit by bit. The prompt is very important here. After some intensive comparing and trying, I have had the best experience with Bard / Gemini. With the prompt ‘Improve my text linguistically’ I get good results with three alternatives that are really worth comparing exactly. It is helpful that the adjustments are explained and justified. I usually create my own personalised list of suggestions and make sure that the results are not too lurid.
