Diese wurde 312 v. Chr. von Appius Claudius Caecus in Auftrag gegeben und begann in Rom an der Porta Capena. Urspr\u00fcnglich verlief sie \u00fcber 195 Kilometer lediglich bis Capua. Um 190 v. Chr. erfolgte jedoch die Verl\u00e4ngerung der Stra\u00dfe bis nach Brundisium (dem heutigen Brindisi), das sich in der Folge zum bedeutendsten Umschlagplatz f\u00fcr Waren und Sklaven aus dem Orient entwickelte.<br>Damit stieg die Via Appia zu einer der wichtigsten Handelsstra\u00dfen Italiens und des gesamten R\u00f6mischen Reiches auf. Nicht zuf\u00e4llig erhielt sie bereits in der Antike den ehrenvollen Beinamen Regina Viarum \u2013 die \u201eK\u00f6nigin der Stra\u00dfen\u201c.<br>Da ein r\u00f6misches Gesetz die Bestattung von Toten innerhalb der Wohnsiedlungen untersagte, wurden die Gr\u00e4ber in der Regel entlang der Ausfallstra\u00dfen angelegt. Als eine der zentralen Verkehrsachsen Roms bot die Via Appia den hier Bestatteten beziehungsweise ihren Familien mit ihren Grabbauten eine hervorragende M\u00f6glichkeit, ihr Ansehen und ihren Wohlstand zu repr\u00e4sentieren. Entlang der Via Appia wurden daher nicht nur zahlreiche Gr\u00e4ber angelegt, sondern vor allem auch eine Reihe imposanter Grabmonumente errichtet, weshalb sie auch als das l\u00e4ngste Museum der Welt gilt.<br>Gleich am ersten Tag unserer Rom-Reise zum Jahreswechsel 1998\/1999 fuhren wir zur Via Appia Antica und wanderten einige Kilometer auf dieser historischen Route. Neben den immer wieder beeindruckenden Ausblicken und der in Teilen noch erhaltenen antiken Pflasterung waren die Grabm\u00e4ler am Stra\u00dfenrand ein besonderes Highlight. An einem, zum Gl\u00fcck auch noch besonders fotogenen Teil der Via Appia Antica mit tollen Pinien und einer einsamen Statue an einem alten Grab, erlebten wir auch noch als besonderes Highlight diesen Sch\u00e4fer mit seiner Schafherde. Wow! was f\u00fcr ein Gl\u00fcck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:700\">Via Appia Antica<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\"><br>Rome, Italy, 1998<br><br>The Via Appia Antica (\u2018Ancient Appian Way\u2019) in Rome still follows the historic route of the famous Via Appia. It was commissioned by Appius Claudius Caecus in 312 BC and began in Rome at the Porta Capena. Originally, it ran for 195 kilometres to Capua. Around 190 BC, however, the road was extended to Brundisium (today&#8217;s Brindisi), which subsequently developed into the most important trading centre for goods and slaves from the Orient.<br>This made the Via Appia one of the most important trade routes in Italy and the entire Roman Empire. It was no coincidence that it was given the honourable nickname Regina Viarum \u2013 the \u2018Queen of Roads\u2019 \u2013 in ancient times.<br>As Roman law prohibited the burial of the dead within residential areas, graves were usually located along the arterial roads. As one of Rome&#8217;s central transport axes, the Via Appia offered those buried here and their families an excellent opportunity to display their prestige and wealth with their tombs. Not only were numerous graves laid out along the Via Appia, but a series of imposing funerary monuments were also erected, which is why it is considered the longest museum in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\">On the very first day of our trip to Rome at the turn of 1998\/1999, we drove to Via Appia Antica and walked a few kilometres along this historic route. In addition to the consistently impressive views and the ancient paving that is still preserved in parts, the tombs along the roadside were a particular highlight. At a particularly photogenic section of the Via Appia Antica with magnificent pine trees and a solitary statue at an old grave, we also had the special treat of encountering this shepherd with his flock of sheep. Wow!
