Im bitterkalten Winter 1995\/96, kurz nachdem Matthias und ich auf der zugefrorenen Alster in Hamburg gecampt hatten, wollten wir zwei Tage sp\u00e4ter versuchen, dasselbe auf der zugefrorenen Oberelbe zu tun. Unser Ziel war die Elbaue nahe Boizenburg, genauer gesagt bei Gothmann, um herauszufinden, ob die Bedingungen ein sicheres Campen auf dem Fluss zulie\u00dfen. Doch statt einer glatten Eisfl\u00e4che fanden wir hier ineinander verschobene und gestaute Eisschollen, die st\u00e4ndig knarrten. Den Flu\u00df hier zu Fu\u00df zu \u00fcberqueren war das Eine, hier auf der Elbe zu campen war das Andere. Das Risiko war uns schlicht zu hoch, und so lie\u00dfen wir das Vorhaben sein. Bereits einen Tag sp\u00e4ter wurde es w\u00e4rmer, und unser Plan war pass\u00e9. Was jedoch blieb, sind die beeindruckenden Bilder dieses Tages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:700\">Ice floes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\"><br>Upper Elbe near Gothmann, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, 1996<br><br>If you drive eastwards from the Schleswig-Holstein border along the Elbe and leave Boizenburg behind, you enter the relatively untouched Elbe floodplain. In the bitterly cold winter of 1995\/96, shortly after Matthias and I had camped on the frozen Alster in Hamburg, we wanted to try the same thing on the frozen Upper Elbe two days later. Our destination was the Elbe floodplain near Boizenburg, more precisely near Gothmann, to find out whether conditions allowed for safe camping on the river. But instead of a smooth ice surface, we found ice floes that had shifted and piled up, constantly creaking. Crossing the river here on foot was one thing, camping here on the Elbe was another. The risk was simply too high for us, so we abandoned the plan. Just one day later, it got warmer and our plan was obsolete.
