Saint-Malo fasziniert vor allem durch seinen historischen Stadtkern und die imposanten Stadtmauern. Die Altstadt liegt auf einer kleinen Halbinsel und wird auf drei Seiten vom \u00c4rmelkanal umsp\u00fclt. Dieser weist hier mit einem Tidenhub von bis zu 12 Metern einen der h\u00f6chsten Gezeitenunterschiede Europas auf. Bei Ebbe erstreckt sich vor der Stadt ein riesiger Sandstrand, der bei Flut von zwei bis drei Metern Wasser bedeckt ist.
Meine erste Begegnung mit Saint-Malo im Jahr 1982 h\u00e4tte beinahe ein nasses Ende genommen. Mein Freund und ich planten damals, in unseren Schlafs\u00e4cken am Strand zu \u00fcbernachten. Gegen 22 Uhr, als wir uns gerade am Strand in unseren Schlafs\u00e4cken ablegen wollten, kam ein \u00e4lterer Mann am Strand l\u00e4ngs und warnte uns eindringlich vor dem enormen Tidenhub. Er erkl\u00e4rte, dass der Strand am Morgen komplett \u00fcberflutet sein w\u00fcrde. Zum Gl\u00fcck folgten wir seinem Rat und verbrachten die Nacht stattdessen im Bahnhof. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen konnten wir uns selbst davon \u00fcberzeugen, wie recht er gehabt hatte.
Besonders beeindruckt haben mich die alten Eichenpf\u00e4hle vor der Festungsmauer und am Strand. Diese wurden vor langer Zeit als Wellenbrecher zum Schutz der Mauern in den Boden gerammt. Es ist faszinierend zu beobachten, wie die alten Baumst\u00e4mme vom Wasser angegriffen werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saint-Malo is particularly fascinating due to its historic town centre and imposing city walls. The old town is located on a small peninsula and is surrounded on three sides by the English Channel. With a tidal range of up to 12 metres, this is one of the highest tidal differences in Europe. At low tide, a huge sandy beach stretches out in front of the town, which is covered by two to three metres of water at high tide.
My first encounter with Saint-Malo in 1982 almost ended in disaster. My friend and I had planned to spend the night in our sleeping bags on the beach. At around 10 p.m., just as we were about to settle down in our sleeping bags on the beach, an elderly man came along and warned us urgently about the enormous tidal range. He explained that the beach would be completely flooded by morning. Fortunately, we followed his advice and spent the night at the train station instead. The next morning, we saw for ourselves how right he had been.
I was particularly impressed by the old oak piles in front of the fortress wall and on the beach. These were driven into the ground long ago as breakwaters to protect the walls. It is fascinating to watch how the old tree trunks are being eroded by the water.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n
