Besonders der Geestrand fasziniert mit seinen tief eingeschnittenen Trockent\u00e4lern. Lange Zeit hielt man die Harburger Berge f\u00fcr eine Endmor\u00e4ne der Weichsel-Eiszeit. Heute ist jedoch anerkannt, dass die Geestkante im Periglazial, also im kalten Klima am Rande der Gletscher, durch Schmelz- und Niederschlagswasser geformt wurde. Da dieses Wasser auf dem Dauerfrostboden nicht versickern konnte, kam es im Sommer zu starkem Bodenflie\u00dfen (Solifluktion), wodurch die gro\u00dfen T\u00e4ler entstanden, die heute trocken liegen. Ein Gro\u00dfteil der Harburger Berge ist bis heute bewaldet.<br>Der Falkenberg ist einer der markantesten Berge am Geestrand. Mit 63 Metern \u00fcber Normalnull bietet er einen weiten Blick \u00fcber das Elbe-Urstromtal. Geologisch gesehen ist der Falkenberg ein Zeugenberg, der die einstige Ausdehnung der Ablagerungen aus der Saale-Eiszeit zeigt. W\u00e4hrend der Weichsel-Eiszeit wurde die umliegende Landschaft durch die periglaziale \u00dcberformung erodiert, sodass der Falkenberg als eigenst\u00e4ndiger Berg zur\u00fcckblieb.<br>Einer alten Sage nach soll der Seer\u00e4uber Klaus St\u00f6rtebeker in der N\u00e4he des Falkenbergs einen Schatz vergraben haben. Bis in die fr\u00fchen 1970er-Jahre gab es auf der Spitze des Falkenbergs ein beliebtes Ausflugslokal. Als ich 1984 dieses Foto machte, waren von dem Geb\u00e4ude nur noch ein paar Betonfundamente \u00fcbrig. Dennoch hat der Ort, besonders in der D\u00e4mmerung, noch immer etwas Mystisches an sich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:600\">Falkenberg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\"><br>Harburg Hills, Hamburg-Neugraben, Hamburg, Germany, 1984<br><br>The Harburg Hills, located south of Hamburg, stretch from the Geestrand on the Elbe glacial valley to the wooded Geest. The Geestrand in particular is fascinating with its deeply cut dry valleys. For a long time, the Harburg Hills were considered to be a terminal moraine from the Weichselian glaciation. Today, however, it is recognised that the edge of the geest was formed during the periglacial period, i.e. in the cold climate at the edge of the glaciers, by meltwater and precipitation. As this water could not seep into the permafrost, it caused severe soil flow (solifluction) in the summer, creating the large valleys that are now dry. Much of the Harburg hills are still forested today.<br>The Falkenberg is one of the most striking hills on the edge of the geest. At 63 metres above sea level, it offers a wide view over the Elbe glacial valley. Geologically speaking, the Falkenberg is a witness mountain that shows the former extent of the deposits from the Saale Ice Age. During the Weichselian Ice Age, the surrounding landscape was eroded by periglacial reshaping, leaving the Falkenberg as an isolated mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\">According to an old legend, the pirate Klaus St\u00f6rtebeker buried a treasure near Falkenberg. Until the early 1970s, there was a popular restaurant at the top of Falkenberg. When I took this photo in 1984, only a few concrete foundations remained of the building.
