Der St. Agnes Mining District z\u00e4hlt f\u00fcr mich zu den spektakul\u00e4rsten Abschnitten der cornischen Atlantikk\u00fcste. Hier liegen die Ruinen alter Tin-Mines unmittelbar an der malerischen Steilkante. Nicht ohne Grund wurde die \u201aCornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape\u2018 bereits 2006 in die Liste des UNESCO-Welterbes aufgenommen.
Die Geschichte des Bergbaus in Cornwall reicht bis in die Bronzezeit (ca. 2.000 bis 1.000 v. Chr.) zur\u00fcck. Seine Bl\u00fctezeit erlebte er jedoch im 19. Jahrhundert, bevor fallende Weltmarktpreise f\u00fcr Kupfer und Zinn die F\u00f6rderung unrentabel machten. Einst gab es rund 600 Bergwerke, in denen m\u00e4chtige Dampfmaschinen das eindringende Wasser aus den Sch\u00e4chten pumpten. Die hier gezeigte Anlage, Wheal Coates, war von 1802 bis 1889 und nochmals kurzzeitig zwischen 1911 und 1913 in Betrieb. Die drei markanten \u201aEngine Houses\u2018 aus dem Jahr 1870, in denen einst die Dampfmaschinen stampften, stehen heute als stille Zeugen direkt am Kliff.
Ich habe diesen Ort auf beiden meinen Cornwall-Reisen besucht und dabei zwei v\u00f6llig gegens\u00e4tzliche, aber gleicherma\u00dfen faszinierende Stimmungen erlebt: W\u00e4hrend mein erster Besuch von strahlendem Sommerwetter gepr\u00e4gt war, lag die K\u00fcste beim zweiten Mal in einem dichten Nebelstreifen. Nur hin und her riss der Schleier f\u00fcr wenige Augenblicke auf, w\u00e4hrend nur 500 Meter landeinw\u00e4rts die Sonne schien. Dieser K\u00fcstennebel verlieh der Szenerie eine ganz eigene Mystik, die auch die Stimmung dieses Bildes bestimmt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, the St Agnes Mining District is one of the most spectacular stretches of the Cornish Atlantic coast. Here, the ruins of old tin mines lie right on the edge of the picturesque cliffs. It is no surprise that the \u2018Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape\u2019 was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List back in 2006.
The history of mining in Cornwall dates back to the Bronze Age (approx. 2000 to 1000 BC). However, it reached its peak in the 19th century, before falling world market prices for copper and tin made extraction unprofitable. There were once around 600 mines, in which mighty steam engines pumped the water seeping into the shafts. The site shown here, Wheal Coates, was in operation from 1802 to 1889 and again briefly between 1911 and 1913. The three striking \u2018engine houses\u2019 dating from 1870, where the steam engines once pounded away, now stand as silent witnesses right on the cliff\u2019s edge.
I visited this place on both of my trips to Cornwall and experienced two completely contrasting, yet equally fascinating atmospheres: Whilst my first visit was blessed with glorious summer weather, on my second trip the coast was shrouded in a thick band of fog. The veil only parted for a few moments here and there, whilst just 500 metres inland the sun was shining. This coastal fog lent the scene a mystique all of its own, which also defines the mood of this photograph.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n
