Wie es zu dem Namen gekommen ist, wei\u00df angeblich niemand mehr.<br>Auf jeden Fall hat sich die Irrel tief durch den harten Luxemburger Sandstein und das daraus geformte Ferschweiler Plateau gefressen. Die Oberh\u00e4nge des urspr\u00fcnglichen Kerbtals bestehen aus Sandstein, die Unterh\u00e4nge aus Tonen, Mergeln und Gipsen des Keuper. W\u00e4hrend der letzten Kaltzeit wurde der Hang instabil und es kam zu einem Felssturz mit anschlie\u00dfendem Aufstau und \u00dcberlauf. Dabei wurden die weichen Gesteinsschichten ausger\u00e4umt und wegtransportiert. Die \u00fcbriggebliebenen Brocken des Luxemburger Sandsteins bilden heute die Stromschnellen der \u201eIrreler Wasserf\u00e4lle\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:600\">\u201cIrreler Waterfalls\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-garamond-font-family has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-style:italic;font-weight:400\"><br>S\u00fcdeifel Nature Park, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, 1995<br><br>The Irreler Waterfalls are actually rapids situated on the lower reaches of the River Pr\u00fcm, between Pr\u00fcmzurlay and Pr\u00fcm. Apparently, nobody knows any more how they got their name.<br>In any case, the River Irrel has carved its way deep through the hard Luxembourg sandstone and the Ferschweiler Plateau formed from it. The upper slopes of the original V-shaped valley consist of sandstone, whilst the lower slopes consist of clays, marls and gypsum from the Keuper period. During the last ice age, the slope became unstable, leading to a rockslide followed by a damming-up of the river and subsequent overflow. In the process, the soft rock layers were cleared away and carried off.
