Ostia Antica ist das Ausgrabungsgelände der antiken Hafenstadt Ostia, die als erste Kolonie Roms gilt und möglicherweise von Ancus Marcius, dem vierten römischen König, im 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründet wurde. Archäologische Funde belegen jedoch erst eine Besiedlung ab dem 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Die ältesten erhaltenen Bauwerke, wie das Castrum (Militärlager) und das Capitol, stammen aus dem 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Ursprünglich diente Ostia als Militärlager zur Sicherung Roms und zur Kontrolle des Seehandels. Schnell entwickelte es sich jedoch zu einer bedeutenden Hafenstadt und zu einem Stützpunkt der römischen Flotte. Bereits im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. war es einer der wichtigsten Häfen Roms.
Obwohl die Ruinen von Ostia historisch betrachtet nicht so bedeutend sind wie die Roms, haben mich die Gesamtanlage und ihre Atmosphäre sehr beeindruckt. Sie steht den römischen Ruinen in nichts nach. Dieses Foto zeigt eine Statue, die ich dort entdeckt habe. Leider konnte ich im Nachhinein nicht herausfinden, wen sie darstellt oder welche Bedeutung sie hat.

Ostia Antica is the archaeological site of the ancient port city of Ostia, which is considered to be Rome’s first colony and was possibly founded by Ancus Marcius, the fourth Roman king, in the 7th century BC. However, archaeological finds only provide evidence of settlement from the 4th century BC onwards. The oldest surviving structures, such as the Castrum (military camp) and the Capitol, date from the 3rd century BC.
Originally, Ostia served as a military camp to safeguard Rome and control maritime trade. However, it quickly developed into a major port city and a base for the Roman fleet. By the 3rd century BC, it was already one of Rome’s most important ports.
Although the ruins of Ostia are not as historically significant as those of Rome, I was very impressed by the site as a whole and its atmosphere. It is in no way inferior to the Roman ruins. This photo shows a statue I discovered there. Unfortunately, I was unable to find out afterwards who it depicts or what significance it holds.
